Caterpillar Thanksgiving and Birthday Celebrations!

Mrs. Lewis and Miss Melanie (Isaac's mom) have birthdays only one day apart this week!  We celebrated with Thanksgiving cups and plates, Pilgrim hat crayons and a color-it-yourself tablecloth, cupcakes, cookie turkeys, and orange soda.  The children had a chance to wear their Indian headdresses and necklaces, which Isaac shared with mom.

On Mrs. Lewis' birthday, everyone gets to blow out a candle.

We hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving, with travel mercies and good food.  See you Tuesday, December 3.

Caterpillar Numbers/Nursery Rhymes

The Caterpillars started their week impressing Mrs. Lewis by identifying all numerals 1-5, and most of 6-10!  We played several games in the Circle involving putting numerals in order or counting items.  Mrs. Lewis tried to trick us by leaving one number out, but we were not fooled.  Even puzzles with little tiny items to count did not slow us down.
Mrs. Lewis introduced an art activity involving a giant shoe using tracing, cutting, hole punching, and lacing, but even more popular were the spiders made using the same skills.  Miss Muffet had no chance of a quiet snack in our classroom today.

Went had great Fire Safety Week.  We made thank you cards.  We read lots of books about Fire Safety.  We went to the Fire Station.

Here the Butterflies pose with a Firefighter friend.

It takes 3 Firefighters or 15 Butterflies to hold a fire hose.

Caterpillar company

After listening to McGruff tell us "Don't play with matches, stay down & crawl out, and Stop Drop, & Roll on Tuesday, we welcomed firefighters from the Bella Vista Fire Department to our classroom today.  Even a big friendly firefighter looks different in his full turnout gear, so it was good to watch the transformation happen right in our own space.  The children listened carefully, and seemed to accept the fact that it was indeed the same friend, whether or not he wore his mask and air tank.  We went to the parking lot to get a closer look at the trucks.  Unfortunately the firefighters were called to a grass fire, but it was pretty cool to see them pull away with lights flashing!

Caterpillars indoors

Fortunately for Mrs. Lewis, our Caterpillar class is still intrigued by playing in the Big Room.  Tuesday we threw bean bags to see who could fling the farthest, and played "What Time is it, Mr. Wolf?".  Thursday we tested a few more skills on an obstacle course.  Crawl under, jump over, toss, balance, all these words were used to describe the challenges.  What a pleasant surprise; these 3 & 4 year olds followed directions beautifully, and accomplished every
task.
Longer center time also gave us a chance to really complete a big project, like Isaac's building.

Halloween

We had a great time celebrating Halloween this week.  We made crafts and had a field trip to the Bella Vista Town Center.  Thanks to all the creative moms, dads and grandparents who helped make our celebration a great success.

In the picture above, Butterflies wait for instruction about the big field trip.

The Butterflies are ready to party.

We are so thankful for parent volunteers!!!

Now its really Fall

Caterpillars spent Tuesday making seasonal crafts...pumpkins and bats to match our colors of the week.

Thursday was Trick or Treat day.  We had great weather and the merchants of Town Center were gracious sponsors once again this year.

The party that followed was full of yummy treats, much appreciated by the hungry students
.

Caterpillar Leaves

With another short week, Caterpillars really concentrated on creating trees with Fall Leaves today.  After drawing the tree with a marker, students could choose to glue leaves of colored paper or sponge paint them.  An amazing discovery: red and yellow paint mix together to make orange.  So we had a few red and yellow leaves, but lots of orange.

It was also Jack's birthday today.  We enjoyed every bite of our cupcakes.

Caterpillar leaf walk

The Caterpillar class took a leaf walk Tuesday.  We walked around the church, searching for colorful leaves.  There were a lot!  Most were still wet with dew, so we put them between sheets of newspaper and stacked blocks on top to keep them flat.  Thursday we removed the blocks, and found flat, colorful leaves perfect for use in art projects.  We tried rubbings, but were much more successful with painting the backs of the leaves and using them like stamps.  Lots of proud friends taking art home today.
